High Blood Sugar Symptoms, Causes & Cures
What Levels of Blood Sugar Can Be Considered Normal? Your blood sugar level after fasting for at least 8 hours should be between 70 and 100 milligrams per deciliter. A blood sugar level above 100 mg/dl at any time may indicate that a pre-diabetes condition is present. If your level falls between 100 and 199, this indicates pre-diabetes. Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes is usually the cause when you have a blood sugar level over 200.
You should follow several steps in order to decrease the level of blood sugar. If you would like more normal blood sugar levels, attempt the following;
A. Start by slowly decreasing the amount of carbohydrates you consume. To have greater knowledge of which foods should be consumed, and those which should not, you should check out the diet prescribed by Dr. Richard Bernstein. A longtime nutritional specialist. Dr. Bernstein has carefully tested our recommended diet, with an emphasis on ensuring that all food constituents may be tracked. Ingredients that cannot be tracked can’t be effectively managed. Low-carbohydrate diets do not have to sacrifice flavor, as the meals on our diabetic recipes page demonstrate. Sticking to the right amount of carbohydrates per meal should keep your insulin amounts at the same levels each day.
B. Your blood sugar should be tested many more times a day. We test somewhere between five and ten times each day. Although your fingers may not like it, frequent blood sugar checks are essential to maintaining an appropriate insulin level. You should be aware of your A1C. This test confirms your blood sugar levels for control of diabetes and its complications; it should stay under 6%.
C. Please pay careful attention to when and how your type of insulin works. As an example: Gloria receives approximately 2 units of Regular Humalin insulin before meals. This special insulin is given approx. 40 minutes before a meal since it takes this length of time to start working. A faster acting insulin is Humalog, which starts to be effective about 5 minutes after the dose is taken. Ask your doctor or check online for how long you should wait before eating after you have taken your insulin.
D. Only eat three meals a day and avoid snacks. You need to break your habit of snacking—it’s not as hard as you may think.
Complications from both types of diabetes are strongly correlated with poor management of blood sugar levels. Therefore, keeping one’s blood sugar level in the normal range eliminates most of the risk of complications from diabetes.
Normal blood sugar ranges from 70 to 100 for a non-diabetic. Diabetics should be able to achieve the same blood sugar levels as those who are not diabetic A diabetic can aim for the same levels.
